Alumni Association Board of Governors Dr Ian Walker (President), PhD 2002 Ian WALKER BA, DipEd (Sydney), MA (Macquarie), PhD (UNSW 2002). Ian is Principal of The Kensington Colleges at UNSW. Ian began teaching (English and History) at Ku-Ring-Gai High School, Turramurra, prior to undertaking an MA degree in Special Education at Macquarie University. From 1977 to 1980 he was Teacher-in-Charge of the Special School within the Rivendell Adolescent Unit, Concord, then under the Direction of Dr Marie Bashir. Following a brief period as a Housemaster and teacher of history at Trinity Grammar School, Ian was appointed the first Student Counsellor and Careers Master at Sydney Grammar School. In 1994 he was appointed Dean of New College, UNSW, and in 2002 completed a PhD in history dealing with the relationship between church and university in the establishment of residential colleges in Australian universities. In 2002 he was invited by the University to take up a position as Principal Fellow at The Kensington Colleges, and in late 2005 he was appointed Principal of The Kensington Colleges. He is a member of the Association of Heads of Australian University Colleges and Halls, and is an invited attendee at meetings of the Student Affairs Committee of the UNSW Council. He is a past President of the Teachers Guild of NSW and Chairman of the Bible Society NSW. He has been a member of the Council of St Catherine’s School, Waverley, since 1988, and has been Chair of Council since 2002. Mr Damian Stephenson (Vice-President), BSc 2002 Damian STEPHENSON BSc (Business Information Technology) 2001. Damian works as a Strategy Consultant for Westpac Banking Corporation’s Business and Technology Services Group. Prior to Westpac, Damian was actively involved in the creation of a successful technology business. Damian was a Co-Op Scholar during his studies in Business Information Technology at UNSW, and has a strong interest in Australia's social and economic engagement with Asia. Mr Peter W Bergman, BCom 1963 Peter BERGMAN BCom (UNSW 1963), DipEd (UNE), CPA. Peter Bergman’s career has been predominantly in international trade, with extensive experience gained through overseas postings in Canada, Hong Kong, Iran, Indonesia, Yugoslavia and Thailand with the Australian Trade Commission (Austrade). He was most recently attached to Austrade's Sydney Head Office with Regional Office responsibility for the markets of North East Asia including Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Vietnam. Peter is a member of the Board of NewSouth Global, a controlled entity of UNSW. He is also a member of the Faculty Advisory Board of the Faculty of Commerce and Economics at UNSW. He was President of the UNSW Alumni Association 2005 – 2006. Ms Jennifer Bott Jennifer BOTT BA (Sydney), DipEd (UNE) Jennifer Bott is Chief Executive of the UNSW Foundation. Prior to this Jenny was CEO of the Australia Council, the Australian Government’s arts funding and advisory body. Presiding over the organisation charged with enriching the life of the nation by supporting and promoting the arts, she oversaw a staff of 150 and an annual budget of $161 million. Before joining the Australia Council in 1999, Jennifer spent seven years as General Manager of Musica Viva Australia. Previous to this she was National Director of AFS International Programs, an international student exchange program. She has also held senior management positions at Opera Australia and the Arts Council of Australia. She is a member of CEDA, Committee for Economic Development of Australia, and a member of Chief Executive Women, Chair of Australians for the Return of the Parthenon Marbles, a trustee of the Opera Benevolent Fund, and a Life Member of Musica Viva. She was a board member of Opera Australia and the Australian Institute of Arts management, and Deputy Chair of AFS International (New York), and of the Sydney Leadership Programme 2002 (Benevolent Society of NSW). She was also Australia’s Cultural Commissioner for the 2004 Olympics. Dr Keith Bowling, Associate STC, BSc 1952, PhD 1955 Keith BOWLING Associate STC, BSc 1952, PhD 1955. Keith completed the six year part time Chemical Engineering Diploma at the old Sydney Technical College in 1949, while working in food and chemical laboratories in the daytime. After completing a Conversion Course in 1950 to obtain his Bachelor's degree he carried out research over the next four years on a process for producing metallic titanium, which was then attracting industrial interest as a strong, light weight, non corrosive wonder metal. Keith's thesis, based on this research, won him a PhD degree. After graduation Keith went back into industry for two years, doing filtration and design work for a small chemical engineering company, then joined CSIRO where he spent 30 years conducting research on a wide range of industrially relevant topics, including coal processing and gasification, iron ore pelletizing and direct reduction, and the production of very low ash coal. When Keith retired he said he was not retiring from life and he still keeps very busy. One of his current interests is the Alternative Technology Association, which promotes sustainable and renewable forms of energy and resource management. Mr Darren Challis, MBA 2000 Darren CHALLIS BA, LLB (Hons) (Sydney), GradDipLegalPractice (UTS), MBA (AGSM 2000). Darren is a consultant with the Sydney office of the global executive search firm, Egon Zehnder International, where he helps clients to find and develop senior executives and non-executive directors. Darren previously worked as the Group Director, New Media Development and Director, Commercial Strategy at John Fairfax Holdings Limited; a Project Leader at The Boston Consulting Group; a corporate and finance lawyer with Minter Ellison, and as a freelance journalist specialising in technology and communications writing for publications including Australian Macworld and The Sydney Morning Herald. Darren is currently an elected graduate member of the UNSW University Council, its governing body, and previously served as a Postgraduate Member on the University Council between 1998 and 1999. He currently serves on the University's Finance Committee, and has previously served on the Student Guild and Postgraduate Board. Mr Ben Chng, BBuild 1967 Ben CHNG Kee Cheong, BBuild 1967. Ben was elected President of the UNSW Alumni Association Singapore Chapter in 2006 and is its nominated Representative Governor. Since graduation from the then Faculty of Architecture & Building at UNSW Ben has practiced as a Project Manager and Quantity Surveyor. He completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 1985. Ben was a Director of WT Partnership in Australia and Asia until 1996 and is currently Principal of the MRBC Partnership Brunei. He is active in Community Service serving as President, Rotary Club of Singapore West in 1975 - 1976 and District Governor, Rotary International District 3310, 1994 – 95. He was a Council member of St John’s Ambulance Brigade from 2002 to 2004 and Vice Chairman, Singapore Cancer Society, also between 2002 and 2004. He remains a Council member of the Singapore Cancer Society. Professor Joan Cooper Joan COOPER BMath (Hons), PhD (N’cle) Joan took up her appointment as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Students) and Registrar at UNSW in May 2007. In this role she will be managing the whole spectrum of the undergraduate student experience – from recruitment through to graduation. She will also be responsible for postgraduate coursework students. Professor Cooper was formerly Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at Flinders University. She is also a former Dean of Informatics at the University of Wollongong, where she served as Chair of the University Senate, and has held senior positions at the Australian National University and The University of Newcastle. At Flinders, Professor Cooper had been responsible for the leadership and management of academic policies and procedures, and leadership in quality assurance, learning and teaching. She was the foundation Professor of Information Technology at Wollongong University, and the first female professor of IT in Australia. In 2003 she was appointed an Emeritus Professor of Wollongong, a title conferred in recognition of her contribution to the University, and in 2004 she was awarded the University of Newcastle’s Convocation Medal for Professional Excellence. Dr Carole Elvin, GradDipProfArtStud 1986, MFA 1991, MArtEd 1995 Carole ELVIN DipTeach (Technical), BEd (TAFE), GradDipProfArtStudies 1986, MFA 1991, MArtEd 1995 (UNSW), EdDoc. Carole has exhibited continuously as a painter since 1964, with work appearing at the Art Gallery of NSW, Wollongong City Gallery, Newcastle City Gallery, UNSW’s Ivan Dougherty, and the Watters Gallery, Sydney, the Ray Hughes gallery in Brisbane and also Arthaus, Works Gallery, and UNSW’s Kudos Gallery in Sydney. She is represented in collections both in Australia and overseas. She has taught with TAFENSW Schools of Fine Arts since 1972 in the disciplines of painting, drawing, and art history / theory and is Head Teacher of Fine Arts and Photography at Nepean TAFE. She possesses extensive experience as a curriculum developer and project manager. Membership of professional bodies – National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA), NSW Teachers Federation, The Australia-Pacific Federation for Art Education, and the Australian Art Education Association. Carole is the Representative Governor nominated by the College of Fine Arts Chapter of the UNSW Alumni Association. Ms Selena Hooper, BSc LLB 1986 Selena HOOPER BSc LLB 1986. Selena has extensive experience working at Universities namely as: Deputy Manager, Research Services at the University of Tasmania, negotiating research and related contracts at UNSW, and Contracts Officer at Sydney University Business Liaison Office and Commercial Law Tutor over a period of more than 8 years. In addition she participated in a student residential College associated with UNSW for over ten years, and currently is the Principal of Creston College. Selena has also worked with a variety of Government Departments, industry groups and corporations. She started off her working career as a Corporate Lawyer for an oil and gas exploration company, Ampol Exploration Limited. Committee/association involvement: Member Executive Committee, Association for Tertiary Education Management during 2002 - 2005. Member UTAS Staff Development Committee in 2004. Provided support to statewide ethics committees, UTAS. Member Australasian Research Management Society during 2003 -2004. Member of Council UNSW Law Alumni Association, 2 years. Current member of the Association of Heads of Australian University Colleges and Halls. Selena has a strong sense of community service and has participated in and organised many community service projects for the elderly, for disadvantaged children plus for indigenous children. Mrs Jennifer Horder, BSc 1975, GradDipPubHealth 2001 Jennifer HORDER DipTeach (Sydney Teachers College), BSc 1975, GradDipPubHealth 2001. Mrs Horder has over 20 years science teaching experience in NSW high schools. She has had broad committee involvement, and experience, particularly in the education arena. She was the foundation Manager (1996 – 2006) at the Museum of Human Disease, UNSW, where she has built a very successful high school and community visitors program. She has expanded her involvement in the museum sector, locally and overseas, through various museum Special Interest Groups and conference contributions. She was recently appointed as Manager of Learning Services at the Australian Museum in Sydney. She has served as an elected member of the Alumni Board of Governors at UNSW since 1997, including a number of years on the Executive and several years as Vice President. Mr Rod Houng-Lee, BCom 1980, LLB 1981 Rod HOUNG-LEE BCom 1980, LLB 1981. Mr Houng-Lee's career since university has been spent in professional accounting, and international tax in particular. Today Rod is the Senior Tax Partner Head of Tax Services of PricewaterhouseCoopers in China and Hong Kong. He is currently the President of the UNSW Alumni Association Hong Kong Chapter Mr Geoffrey Lawson, BOptom 1984 Geoffrey Francis LAWSON OAM BOptom 1984, OAA. Geoff Lawson graduated with a degree in Optometry from UNSW in 1984. At that time he was rated the best fast bowler in the world after successful series against England and the West Indies. He has been associated with UNSW Cricket Club since 1976 and still holds positions on the general committee and coaching staff. He was awarded a Blue in the sport of cricket in 1978 after being selected to represent Australia whilst still an undergraduate. He was also awarded life membership for services to University sport in 1999 and became an inaugural member of the UNSW Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. He is on the Australian University Sport Awards Committee. Geoff has been on the UNSW Sports Association executive for eight years as Vice-President and was re-elected to that position in 2004. He has held directorships on the NRMA and NSW Sports Federation. At present he is a Trustee of the Sydney Cricket Ground and Sydney Football Stadium and a member of the Advertising Standards Board of Australia. Geoff chaired the Optometry Building Appeal Committee which contributed heavily towards the construction of the Rupert Myers Building where the School of Optometry and leading Vision research units are now housed. In 1990 he was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for services to cricket and in 2001 the University of NSW Jubilee Medal. Dr Rob Lee, BSc 1966, PhD 1971 Rob LEE BSc 1966, PhD 1971 Dr Lee was elected President of the UNSW Alumni Association Victorian Chapter in 2006 and is its nominated Representative Governor. Ms Belinda Liu, BCom 2007 Belinda LIU BCom 2007 Belinda currently works as a management consultant at Pacific Strategy Partners. She was a Co-op scholar at UNSW, interned at multiple international firms prior to graduation, was a tutor of Macroeconomics at the School of Economics, UNSW and studied on exchange at the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania. Belinda was actively involved in the UNSW student community, being part of four revues and two orientation week programs. Belinda is particularly interested in broadening interactions and increasing networking opportunities amongst young alumni. Mr Julian Reynolds, BCom 1966 Julian REYNOLDS BCom (UNSW 1966), MBA (Stanford). Mr Reynolds is a founder and Director of Reynolds Stockbrokers, a participant firm of the Australian Stock Exchange Limited. He has been actively involved in the stockbroking industry for the past 39 years and specialises in private client investments. Dr Adrienne Thompson, PhD 1973 Adrienne Ruth THOMPSON BSc (Hons), MSc (Sydney), PhD (UNSW 1973). Dr Thompson is a retired research scientist. She has worked with CSIRO, DSIR (England) and at the universities of Utah, Sydney and UNSW. She has worked for UNSW in various capacities. She has been active for many years in the Alumni Association as Vice-President, Secretary and Board member and is currently a Governor. She has a particular interest as Convenor of the Committee of the UNSW Alumni Associates, an interest group for retired staff. She was a member of the University Council (1983-90) elected by the graduates and has represented UNSW on the Board of International House (1987-94). She is also a current member of the Committee of the Friends of the ABC Professor Mark Uncles Mark UNCLES BSc (Hons), PhD (Bristol University). Mark was appointed Professor of Marketing, School of Marketing, UNSW, in 1996. Since 1998 he has been Head, School of Marketing. His research interests include studies of buyer behaviour, the purchasing of branded goods, store patronage, patterns of consumer loyalty and loyalty-building initiatives. He also has an interest in the uses of consumer panels, longitudinal data analysis, discrete choice modelling and advances in marketing science. He has published in leading peer-refereed journals, sits on seven editorial boards and is co-editor of the Australasian Marketing Journal and an area editor of the Australian Journal of Management. Professor Uncles was previously H.J.Heinz Professor of Brand Management at Bradford Management Centre, University of Bradford. Before this he spent nine years on the Marketing Faculty at London Business School. He originally studied geographical sciences at the University of Bristol. He is a member of the graduate associations of London Business School and the University of Bristol, both of which are strong organizations working in support of members and their respective institutions. Ms Gabrielle Upton, BA LLB 1988 Gabrielle Cecelia UPTON BA LLB (UNSW), MBA (NYU), GAICD. As a lawyer and banker, Gabrielle has worked in Sydney, London and New York where she lived for six years. Gabrielle is currently Legal Counsel at the Australian Institute of Company Directors. After graduation from Law School, Gabrielle worked as a solicitor at one of Australia's largest law firms, Freehills, and then at Phillips Fox as a banking lawyer. She completed her Masters of Business Administration at New York University, New York in 1995 and worked in New York as an Assistant Vice President in the corporate finance division at Deutsche Bank and Toronto Dominion Bank. Gabrielle serves as a member of UNSW's Audit and Risk Management Committees and was appointed as Pro Chancellor in February 2005. Gabrielle is a member of the Editorial Advisory Committee of the Menzies Research Centre, an independent think tank, which undertakes research on social, economic and political issues. She is also a member of the National Trust's Diamond Anniversary Fundraising Committee. Mr Gary Vaughan, BCom 1965, MA 1993 Gary VAUGHAN BCom 1965, MA 1993. Mr Vaughan has worked in a variety of Accounting positions within the Philips Industries group. Gary became a Director of a Singapore public company and built a number of businesses across Asia and the Middle East within the Group in the area of food and beverage retailing and wholesaling. He returned to Australia and in 1984 to become the managing Director Asia Pacific for the Computerland group. Gary is passionate about Australia and its engagement with Asia and speaks on Asian issues whenever he can. He also advises Australian business on the social, political and cultural issues facing them as they expand into the Asian region. Gary is a Past President of the Alumni Association. Mr Benjamin Zipser, BCom LLB 1992 Benjamin ZIPSER BCom LLB (UNSW 1992), BCL (Oxon). Ben Zipser is a Barrister practising in Sydney. Since 1998, he has lectured part-time in the Law School at the University of Western Sydney (Nepean) and is also a Reporter for Australian Law Reports, and Section Editor for Administrative Law Decisions (since 1997). He has published on regulation, standards of professional care, and unjust contracts, and recently co-authored a forthcoming book on “Professional Liability in Australia”. Formerly a solicitor at the office of the Australian Government Solicitor (1993-1998), in 1996 Ben was awarded a young alumni Award for Achievement (together with Joachim Delaney) for their work in staging the first Australian Model UN Conference for university students. Returning to Sydney after study at Oxford, Ben joined the Board of the Alumni Association. Ben is a Governor elected by the Contributing Members of the Association and has previously served on the Executive Committee of the Board. |
