Alumni Graduand Awards

Graduand Award
The UNSW Alumni Association’s Graduand Award recognises the contribution and achievement of final year students. The Graduand Award is intended to recognise student contribution to the quality of communal life within the University through original modes of service, by promoting cross-cultural links, by outreach to those in need or other service-related activities.

Alumni Graduand Award winners are presented with a prestigious trophy and $500.

Students are eligible for nomination in the graduating year of an undergraduate or postgraduate degree. For the 2009 Awards this includes students completing in 2008 who will be eligible to graduate between September 2008 and July 2009.

Nominations may be made by any member of the University community: members of staff, students, alumni.

When nominating a candidate, please send full details of the nominee's achievements and how she or he has contributed to the quality of communal life within the University including, where appropriate, references from people familiar with the activities. Contact details of both the nominee and the nominator should be provided to allow follow-up. Nominations should, however, aim to include all the information necessary to allow the Alumni Association's Graduand Award Selection Committee to make a decision.

2009 ALUMNI GRADUAND AWARD WINNERS

Ms Kirstin Hunter BA BSc(Med), LLB (Hons)

Kirstin was an exceptional contributor to the university community through voluntary activity and innovation at UNSW from 2002 to 2008. She actively involved herself in service to the university community through the existing student organisations and played a leading role in the creation of Arc@UNSW after the passing of the federal VSU legislation in 2006. Kirstin was the final President of the UNSW Union to serve a full term, and was involved in the O-Week program, the Student Guild, Oral Blitz, UNSWeetened Library Journal and CONTACT. In her final two years, Kirstin served as the undergraduate student representative on the University Council. In all of these instances, Kirstin’s dedication was not only to the task at hand, but to the overall goal of enhancing the quality of student life at UNSW. Kirstin has worked tirelessly to ensure that all of the programs in which she has been involved communicate more widely, run more smoothly, and can continue to operate sustainably long after she leaves the university.

Ms Caitlin Hurley BSc/BA (Hons)

Caitlin has contributed an enormous amount to the UNSW student community through her involvement in various volunteer programs, student societies and directorships on the UNSW Source and Arc@UNSW boards. As Vice-President of UNSW Source, and first full-time Chair of the Board of Arc, Caitlin played a crucial role in ensuring that the newly created Arc was an organisation that was relevant to the students of UNSW and continued to support and encourage student life. Caitlin not only took on the chairmanship of Arc in her first year on the new board, but did so in a manner that was widely recognised as outstanding. Caitlin has made an ongoing contribution to communal life at UNSW through her participation as a volunteer in a number of initiatives including Chairing the inaugural NSW Cancer Council Youth Relay for Life, Outback Assist and the O-Week program. Through her involvement programs such as these, her leadership and interpersonal skills Caitlin has made an ongoing contribution to the communal life at UNSW.

Mr Ran (Frank) Tao BA (Hons) LLB (Hons)

During his six years at UNSW Frank Tao was heavily involved in programs that contributed to communal life. During his time as a volunteer for O-Week he commanded many strategies to effectively use his role as a Yellow Shirt to help new students feel at home in the UNSW community. He was always willing to take on new leadership roles. Frank spent 9 months as the Sponsorship Co-Ordinator to ensure that O-Week was financially resourced to provide the services, activities and entertainment needed to meet its objectives. He never missed an opportunity to introduce by word-of-mouth to his peers the other opportunities on campus eg: those involved in a law revue would become involved in the Yellow Shirt program. Frank worked diligently to liaise with representatives from the Law Faculty, the student Law Society and UNSW Counselling to secure funding and support for LawMSN Mentoring and to ensure its long-term success. His involvement with Outback Assist in the Aboriginal community of Santa Teresa (near Alice Springs) provided him with understanding of the culture and livelihood of the Indigenous people, which will be valuable to him in the practice of law. Frank demonstrated his tenacious commitment to helping his fellow students at UNSW.
