Scholarships, Awards and Prizes

Parsons
"Despite being an alumnus, I had little contact with the University for quite some time, (even though) we had several UNSW graduates working for my company. Then some five years ago I decided to do something concrete by supporting undergraduate prizes. My reasons for this were partly altruistic, partly commercial and partly sentimental. Everyone doing the textiles course is aware of the prizes, so it's good public relations as well as being beneficial for the University and the individual students."

the late Charles Parsons (BCom '67)

Your gift to establish a Scholarship, Award or Prize at UNSW recognises student achievement in academic, artistic, athletic or other fields of endeavour.

Through your support of these initiatives, you help UNSW to attract exceptional students to our University.

Also, through the financial support offered by a scholarship, award or prize, you can assist students in disadvantaged situations - such as financial hardship or rural isolation - who otherwise may not have the opportunity to attend UNSW.

You can establish a Scholarship, Award or Prize in your area of interest, in the faculty where you studied while at UNSW, in memory of a loved one, or to support a cause that you feel passionately about.

Scholarships, Awards & Prizes can be established in any of the Faculties at UNSW and can be for an undergraduate or post-graduate student.

The scholarship, award or prize can bear your name or be named for your interest, in accordance with UNSW naming guidelines.

If you prefer not to establish a new scholarship or award, but would still like to support students at UNSW, the UNSW Foundation has general funds which support scholarships in specific areas such as Indigenous education, rural isolation and research excellence.

Hoffman
"Study at an institution like UNSW, combined with practical experience, can highlight areas for greater emphasis needed in academic study and research. The scholarship I have established will assist younger people coming into this profession to diversify their study and research, and contribute to the breadth of knowledge that Australia needs to successfully manage its urban affairs in the future."

Commissioner Kevin Hoffman (BArch '66)

"I feel indebted in a way because in my day, we didn't have to pay tuition and I thought I would like to give it back. I decided to sponsor scholarships for first year commerce students because I know, from personal experience how hard that can be. We should try to give something back. I wouldn't say that I've achieved much financially, but without the education I received at UNSW, it wouldn't have been possible at all."

Philip Chu (BCom '81)

Scholarship

A scholarship recipient at UNSW receives a minimum of $5,000 per annum for the tenure of the recipient's academic program (travel & sports scholarships are exempt from the criteria). A scholarship may be awarded for academic merit or in combination with equity and other considerations.

Endowed Scholarships

An Endowed Scholarship is offered in perpetuity. It is usually created with a minimum donation of $125,000 to the UNSW Foundation. The scholarship is awarded annually from the interest earned on the investment, based on the UNSW Foundation's current distribution policy.

Beneficial Scholarships

Gifts of less than $125,000 to the UNSW Foundation which are intended to provide scholarships have the entire amount of the capital distributed over a defined period of time. For example, a gift of $20,000 could provide a scholarship to a student of $5,000 per annum for a four year period.

Awards

An Award at UNSW is usually a one-off stipend, or an annual payment of less than $5,000. Awards are based on academic merit or financial need, and assist students in their studies through supporting, for example, the purchase of textbooks, the cost of living, or other initiatives.

Awards have a minimum value of $2,000 per annum to the recipient.

Prizes

Prizes recognise outstanding academic performance at UNSW in a particular field. Prizes are awarded based on the academic results each year or at the recommendation of the Head of School, or Dean in a specific faculty.

Prizes have a minimum value of $500 per annum to the recipient.

Recognition

Grads
Prizes, Awards and Scholarships are awarded to students at an annual Faculty prize ceremony, where donors are invited to attend and have the opportunity to meet the recipient of their Scholarship or Prize.

Recipients are also encouraged to provide donors who establish a scholarship, award or prize with an annual report outlining how the receipt of support has enhanced the student's educational experience.

UNSW Foundation provides donors establishing a scholarship, award or prize with an annual financial statement of how their gift has been managed.
