UNSW wishes to recognise alumni who have achieved excellence in their chosen field of endeavour. The Alumni Awards for Achievement are made to eminent UNSW alumni in Australia and throughout the world who have made outstanding contributions to their community, have stimulated new ideas and services and have shown exceptional dedication, creativity or leadership. The Awards, an annual event since 1981, are a celebration of alumni achievement and demonstrate what can be achieved with a UNSW education. The UNSW Alumni Association seeks your help in locating alumni whose achievements qualify them for these prestigious Awards. If you believe that someone should be recognised for their contribution in any one of the following fields - arts, science, technology, engineering, business, commerce and community service - we would like to know. 2007 ALUMNI AWARD WINNERS BUSINESS & COMMERCE Paul Cave BCom '69 Mr Paul Cave is probably best known as the Founder of BridgeClimb, an iconic company he launched in 1989 and of which he is now Chairman. Following a career in Marketing and General Management for B & D RollADoor, in 1974 Paul founded and created the Amber Group which became Australia’s largest tile and paving retailer with 17 outlets. In 1996 he sold his 100% interest in Amber to staff via a management buyout. In 1989 Paul helped conduct YPO (Young Presidents Organisation) World Congress in Sydney, including a climb over the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The personal dream to share the Summit of the Bridge with everyone was born and 9 years later on October 1st 1998, BridgeClimb was officially launched. Paul’s entrepreneurial endeavours were recognized with the National Entrepreneur of the Year (Business) Award in 2001 and the Australian Export Heroes Award in 2002-03. Additionally Paul is currently a Director of public company Domino’s Pizzas Enterprises Ltd and Director of InterRisk Australia Pty Limited. He is also on the Board of the Sydney Cancer Centre Foundation and has hosted SCCF’s Capital Campaign lunch to raise the $150 million required to establish a new Comprehensive Cancer Centre at RPA Hospital. He has continued to show support for UNSW through his involvement with the Australian School of Business as a member of the Advisory Council, the Campaign Cabinet and Alumni Leaders Network. SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY Dr Zhengrong Shi BSc '83 (Jilin), MSc '86 (Shanghai), PhD '92 UNSW Dr Zhengrong Shi is Chairman of the Board and CEO of Suntech Power Co Ltd, a company he founded in 2001 and which is already the fourth largest photovoltaics manufacturer in the world. Since his graduation with a PhD in Electrical Engineering in 1992 Dr Shi has been at the forefront of both the research and the commercialisation of solar photovoltaic (solar cell) technology. He led UNSW’s pioneering research effort into the silicon-saving deposition of thin active photovoltaic films on glass superstrates, which led to the establishment of the UNSW spin-of company, Pacific Solar Pty Ltd (where he was a research director and executive director from 1995 to 2001) and, subsequently, the world’s leading manufacturer of thin film silicon-on-glass which is now being manufactured at Thalheim in Germany. Between 1992 and 1995, he was a senior research scientist and the leader of the Thin Film Solar Cells Research Group in the Centre of Excellence for Photovoltaic Engineering at UNSW, the only government-sponsored photovoltaic industry research center in Australia. Dr. Shi is the inventor for 11 patents in photovoltaic technologies. He remains a strong ally of the UNSW School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering, providing a Cooperative Scholarship, a research scholarship, funding and in-kind support for collaborative research, purchasing options on intellectual property and making a large donation through the UNSW Foundation. His company is foremost in adoption of innovations in solar cell front contact technologies from UNSW. ARTS & LAW Juliet Bourke BA '86, LLB '88 UNSW, LLM (Hons) '98 Syd Ms Juliet Bourke has demonstrated an enduring commitment to the principles of equity and justice, and has actively worked to improve outcomes for disadvantaged and vulnerable employees via legal and social policy reforms. Juliet has pursued these aims through her employment choices (including working as a lawyer at the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, the NSW Attorney General’s Department, UNSW, Sydney University, the Government and Related Employees Appeals Tribunal and Aequus Partners) as well as her pro bono involvement in, and leadership of, key community organisations. In 2003 Juliet established the Taskforce on Care Costs (a partnership of 45 business and community organisations) to investigate the relationship between work and care, and to advocate for equitable reforms. Over the past four years TOCC's four major research reports have been cited with authority by Government agencies (eg HREOC), politicians and key stakeholders (eg Carers Australia). The Taskforce's model for reform in relation to childcare costs was adopted as the ALP's election policy in the 2007 election. COMMUNITY AT LARGE Michael Carr-Gregg BA (Hons) '79, MA '82 Well, PhD '89 UNSW Dr Michael Carr-Gregg, PhD ’89, is a leading adolescent psychologist who works in private practice in Melbourne. He is an official ambassador for the National Depression Initiative, BeyondBlue, as well as Mindmatters - one of 16 youth suicide prevention programs run by the Federal Government. He specialises in the area of parenting adolescents and adolescent mental health. He has been the Consultant Psychologist to the Victorian Secondary Schools Principal's Association, Australian Boarding Staff Association, the Australian Ballet School, St Catherine's, Kilvington Girls Grammar, and Melbourne Girls College. In 2003 he was one of the founding members of the National Centre Against Bullying and became one of their national spokespersons. He also served on the advisory committee for the Federal Government's Boys' Education Lighthouse School Programme. In 1985, Michael founded the world's first national teenage cancer patients support group - the Australian Teenage Cancer Patient's Society (CanTeen) and in recognition of this pioneering work the UNSW Alumni Association presented him with its Graduand Award in 1987. He has held a variety of appointments including Executive Director of the New Zealand Drug Foundation and Director of the Centre for Social Health at the University of Melbourne and an Associate Professorship in the Department of Paediatrics also at Melbourne University. Michael has been the recipient of a number of awards including the Australian Jaycees Outstanding Young Australian of the Year (1987) and in 1997, he was made a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International in recognition of his work in the prevention of youth suicide.
