FAQ

What is the UNSW Alumni Life Email service?

The UNSW Alumni Life Email is an email account with a capacity of 40 megabytes provided by UNSW that allows you to keep just one email address for life, while offering a wide range of benefits exclusive to UNSW alumni.

What are the benefits of the UNSW Alumni Life Email service?

  • It will help you to maintain better contact with UNSW friends - the @UNSWalumni.com address allows you to tag your “alma mater” brand to your email address, and with it the prestige of being identified as a UNSW alumnus;

  • You will be provided with up-to-the-minute news on University activities, as well as opportunities for continuing study and intellectual development;

  • It will be the last email address you'll ever have to give to your family and friends - you can use it as an email account or forward it to any other existing email account (see Email Forwarding – how does it work?).

How much does it cost?

Nothing. This is a free service provided by UNSW.

Who can register for this service?

This service is only available to UNSW alumni.

How do I use my @UNSWalumni.com address?

Once activated, Alumni Life Email allows you to choose an easily remembered email address based upon your name e.g. mary.tan@UNSWalumni.com. You’ll then be given three options for using your new address:

  • a web-based email service hosted by UNSW – this is a full email service, featuring 40 megabytes of storage and excellent spam and filtering protection via the UNSW Unimail system;

  • access via your existing email client, such as Outlook or Eudora – this still gives you the full service as above;

  • email forwarding – you can forward your new address to an existing service provider such as Hotmail or Yahoo (storage and other features determined by your provider).

What is the difference between using my @UNSWalumni.com address as an email account and using it as an “alias” forwarding address?

Your @UNSWalumni.com email address is a full email service located on the UNSW server. An “alias” address is one that goes through the UNSW server and is routed through to another existing email account, like Hotmail (this is known as “email forwarding”.)

Email Forwarding – how does it work?

Once you’ve activated your account, messages sent to your @UNSWalumni.com address can be re-routed to another email account (eg Hotmail). Just log in – you’ll be taken directly to the Do-It-Yourself Home Page – and follow the instructions under "Email Delivery Location".

How long does it take for my address to be activated?

Approximately one hour after you’ve entered your details, your UNSW Alumni Life Email will be ready to use.

Is the UNSW Alumni Life Email an internet service provider?

No, this is an email-only service.

Further information on the UNSW Alumni Life Email is available from the ITS Support site.
