ALUMNI & SUPPORTERS
Giving to the Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship Appeal

In 2009 donations to the Vice-Chancellor's 2009 Alumni Appeal Scholarships will provide financial assistance to disadvantaged students; these include low socio-economic students, rural students, Indigenous Australians, and students with disabilities.
A scholarship of $5000 per year for the tenure of a student's degree could support additional expenses such as:
- tuition fees
- text books
- travel
- computer expenses
- living expenses
- medical and dental bills
- travel and accommodation costs for compulsory placements

Why do we need scholarships for disadvantaged students?

"I knew when I was 14 or 15 that if you wanted to make changes you needed to know the law. I didn't know how I would do it. When I was offered a place in the Indigenous Pre-Law Program I still didn't know if I could do it. I worked really hard and once I got into the mode of studying law I really enjoyed it."

- All full-time students pay from $5,000 - $8,500 per year for tuition fees only. This does not include textbooks, photocopying, lab manuals, study materials, travel or living away from home expenses.
- Parental income of $30,000 or less allows for one dependent child to receive the Government Youth Allowance – which is only $6,354. This increases to $9,656 for living away from home expenses. (source: Centrelink)
- Across all universities in 2006, 22.7 per cent of full-time students and 33 per cent of part-time students were found to regularly skip classes because they needed to attend employment. (source: AVCC Council of Australia’s University’s Presidents)
- In 2006, at all universities, about one in eight students (12.8 per cent) indicated that they regularly went without food or other necessities because they could not afford them. (AVCC Council of Australia’s University’s Presidents)
100% of each contribution to the UNSW Scholarships Fund goes directly to ensure that talented students, who want access to opportunity at UNSW, are not deterred from doing so for financial reasons. All administrative costs for donated income are met fully by UNSW from other sources.
Donations to UNSW of $2.00 or more are tax deductible in Australia.
