UNSW has a long history of providing business and government with research and academic expertise across a broad range of disciplines and commercial activities. The University draws together a wide diversity of knowledge, from around Australia and internationally, to offer government and business a one-stop shop for everything from specific problem-solving to IP development, transfer and commercialisation.

In 1959, with the creation of Unisearch Ltd, UNSW was the first university in Australia to establish a commercialisation arm. Unisearch Ltd built a strong reputation as a leader in technology transfer, as well as in the provision of expert opinion services.

In order to maintain the University’s leading edge in an increasingly competitive global environment, in August 2005 the University completed a restructure of Unisearch Ltd, separating the company’s commercialisation and consulting businesses. NewSouth Innovations now focuses on commercialisation opportunities for research undertaken at UNSW. The University’s consulting business is now provided by UNSW Global Consulting, a division of UNSW Global.
