UNSW’s research strengths span disciplines from biomedicine, information technology and materials engineering through to economics, social policy, history and cinema. UNSW leads the world in solar cell development and quantum computing, does major research into the removal of environmental pollutants and has invested heavily in key hi-tech disciplines such as Artificial Intelligence and nanotechnology.

UNSW is one of Australia’s major research institutions, with eminent researchers who have extensive international links. Closely aligned with the world’s notable research universities, UNSW researchers have more than 2000 separate international academic and research links with more than 500 universities and research organisations in 90 countries.

The University also has a strong reputation for commercial innovation and works extensively with industry and end-users of research through more than 80 research Centres and government-funded Cooperative Research Centres.

From specific research projects to the establishment of research Chairs and joint venture laboratories, UNSW’s strengths in science and technology are enhanced by flexible, professionally managed, cooperative arrangements with industry and business via the Research Strategy Office, NewSouth Innovations, and the Schools and Faculties. Many of the University’s research findings are turned into important products in the market place and UNSW is one of the largest patenting organisations in Australia.

Contract consultancies and commercialisation

UNSW also offers contract consultancies, research, the management of Intellectual Property (IP) and commercialisation through UNSW Global Consulting (a division of UNSW Global Pty Limited) and the Business Services Unit UNSW/Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA). NewSouth Innovations was the world’s first organisation established to commercialise university research and support the technology transfer that sees new products in the marketplace. Since it’s inception in 1959, Unisearch has filed some 1600 patents, and remains one of Australia’s largest patenting organisations.

Through UNSW Consulting and UNSW Faculties, government and business have access to consultants with the highest levels of expertise for contract research or short-term studies for problem solving. Our consultants have worked on projects as diverse as the uptake of family-friendly workplace provisions for men for the Federal government, to providing expert advice on the light aircraft fuel contamination crisis and landslide risk management in Hong Kong.
