If Women Are Poorer and Men are Lonelier, Who's Happier?
Area: Social Policy Research Centre
Tue Nov 24, 12:30 to 13:30
Location: Level 2, Room 250, Robert Webster Building (G14), UNSW Kensington campus.
Description: Preliminary evidence from studies of social exclusion and social capital in Australia suggest more women face economic barriers to participation from ageing alone with less retirement income, becoming lone parents, and having reduced earnings compared to men, while more men face social barriers from having poorer support networks and a greater perceived sense of social isolation. This seminar will begin to address the impact of various aspects of gendered social connection and social exclusion on emotions and well-being cross-nationally, using data from the latest (2006) wave of the European Social Survey (ESS), and within Australia using data from the HILDA panel dataset.
