Professor McPherson will survey the literature on self-regulation and motivation. Using examples drawn from longitudinal studies of novice to expert learners, Gary will explain how musicians of various abilities learn to take charge of their own progress. He also points out some of the pitfalls of music learning that result in very few learners being able to progress to the highest forms of musical engagement. Key messages will focus on what teachers can to do help struggling students and how to focus instruction to maximise student potential.
