Educational disadvantage applications
ACCESS Scheme
The ACCESS Scheme is available to students who have experienced long term educational disadvantage during Years 11 and 12 and have been affected by circumstances beyond their control. The circumstances considered under the ACCESS Scheme include illness, financial hardship, language difficulties, or attendance at a disadvantaged school.
To apply for the ACCESS Scheme, students must lodge 2 applications with UAC (Universities Admissions Centre):
1. General UAC undergraduate admission to university application
2. UAC Educational ACCESS Schemes (EAS) application.
For more information on the ACCESS Scheme, click here.
Special Consideration for Applicants with Tertiary Study (SCATS)
SCATS is for applicants who have undertaken tertiary studies and who are applying for admission to an undergraduate degree or the Juris Doctor via UAC Postgraduate. SCATS provides a mechanism for applicants whose secondary and/or tertiary performance has been affected by long-term educational disadvantage due to circumstances beyond their control to have this taken into account in the admissions process. Applicants who have been excluded from UNSW or another tertiary institution are required to submit a SCATS application explaining the circumstances surrounding their exclusion. Humanities and Business Pathways Programs
The Diploma in Humanities and Business Pathways Program are one year full time undergraduate programs for domestic students who have not gained entry into their desired program due to educational disadvantage. On successful completion, students have the opportunity to attain a place in a Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Law or Australian School of Business undergraduate degree. Relevant courses from the program can be credited towards the UNSW degree.
Deferring
What does deferment mean?
Deferment means that you have received an offer to enrol in a degree but have been given permission by UNSW to delay the commencement of your degree for a maximum of 2 years.
Who can defer?
All domestic undergraduate applicants who have received an offer to enrol at UNSW and have not previously been granted a deferment for the same (or a similar) degree. Please note that it is not possible to defer a Medical Rural Bonded Scholarship, a Co-op scholarship or an offer to study at ADFA.
How do I defer?
When you receive your offer to enrol in an undergraduate degree, you can choose to defer your offer through the myUNSW Accept Online process. Information included with your letter of offer will explain how to access myUNSW to request a deferment.
On completion of the online deferment request you will be issued with an online Confirmation of Deferment that you can save or print for your records.
Can I defer to commence mid-year?
Most programs at UNSW can be deferred to commence in either Semester One or Semester Two (mid-year), but a limited number of degrees cannot be commenced mid-year. These include, but are not limited to, the following degrees:
- Australian School of Business - Services Marketing (Tourism & Hospitality)
- Arts and Social Sciences - Music, Social Work, Criminology and all Media degrees
- Built Environment - All degrees
- Engineering - Civil Engineering (with Architecture)
- Law - Combined Law
- Medicine - Medicine, Exercise Physiology
- Science - Aviation (Flying), Medical Science, Optometry, Psychology
Whilst most degrees can be commenced mid-year, in some degrees the full range of courses may not be offered in Semester Two. Depending on your choice of courses, you may need to wait until Semester One of the following year to enrol in some areas of study eg. language studies. For further information in relation to restrictions on mid-year enrolment, contact your Faculty Office.
Do I have to pay to defer?
No. UNSW does not charge a fee for deferring.
Can my deferment lapse?
Yes. If you undertake studies at Certificate IV level or higher whilst on deferment, you are not permitted to take up your deferred place with UNSW. You will need to reapply for admission through UAC and declare all of your studies.
How do I take up my deferred place?
If your request to defer is approved, you do not have to reapply for admission via UAC to take up your deferred place. You will be able to login to UNSW's Accept Online facility to take up your deferment and enrol. Instructions on how to do this, as well as details of when the online facility will be available, will be included in your online Confirmation of Deferment advice.
Please note that all deferments are granted subject to the degree being available in a future semester. The University reserves the right to vary or cancel a degree without notice.
