Student safety and the security of personal property is a high priority at UNSW.

Personal Safety at UNSW is something we want you to be aware of. We encourage you to act positively and responsibly to enhance your own safety.

Safety on campus is managed by UNSW Security Services who are dedicated to providing a safe campus for the whole community.

UNSW is a large institution and includes a number of campuses. Each campus has a local security focus so it is important to find out what the safety procedures at each location.

Kensington Campus

Security at Kensington

There are a number of Kensington Campus safety features that we want you to be aware of and use.

UNIBEAT is a crime awareness and prevention program that aims to make our University a more secure and safe place in which to study and work. UNIBEAT includes:

On Kensington Campus a free UNIBEAT bus service operates at night. UNIBEAT buses cover the campus carparks, colleges, libraries and State Transit bus interchanges. The buses are in two-way contact with Security. The Unibeat Shuttle Bus service route has been extended to provide a more current service to Students and Staff.

During the day in-session, there is also a Shuttle Bus Service to and from COFA.

For more information on these UNIBEAT bus services and current timetables see UNIBEAT at UNSW Security Services.

The Unibeat Cycle Escort can be provided to escort you to your car, the bus station or to another building on campus. The UNIBEAT cyclists are in radio contact with the Security control centre from dusk to 12 midnight seven days a week. Escorts are available 24 hours a day. All you have to do is call UNIBEAT on 9385 6000, freecall 1800 626 003. You can also use any Help Point Phone or phone to call UNIBEAT.

The University Walk is a designated after hours safe walking path along the main walkway of the university. Special lighting provides a lighted corridor through Kensington Campus after dark. It extends from Gate 9, upper High Street, and Gate 11, Botany Street, to Anzac Parade Gate and Barker Street via the internal Library Road down through the middle of campus. This walkway is patrolled from dusk to midnight by UNIBEAT cyclists and UNSW Security. We recommend that if you are moving about the University after dusk that you use the University Walk and the cycle escorts.

The Nine Blue Phone Help Points are emergency help points that can be found around campus. You can recognise them as phones mounted on a dark blue pole with a white phone symbol. On the top of each phone is a blue light. If you need help from a Security Officer or need a Unibeat Cycle Escort simply press the button on the unit which will connect you immediately with UNSW Security.

UNIBEAT also includes a Victim Support Service and advice and assistance with Bag Snatch and Stolen Property Incidents.

To enhance your safety
REMEMBER:

  • Keep to well lit areas
  • Try to walk in groups or pairs after dark
  • Report all suspicious activity
  • Report all thefts
  • Don't leave valuables unattended
  • If using public transport wait in well lit areas.
Vehicle Security @ UNSW also recommends that you park in a well lit, busy area. Make sure your surroundings are safe prior to getting into or out of your vehicle.

This seminar defines the student at risk as being:

  • a candidate of academic failure or dropout
  • in acute or chronic personal distress, in moral, physical or emotional danger
  • in psychological distress
  • experiencing a psychological disorder
  • or at risk of harming themselves or someone else.
The UNSW Counselling Service is on call during business hours and support is just a phone call away.
