Application process

The direct application process

Please note: The information below does not apply to current Year 12 students studying in Australia or other non-Year 12 local students. Information about the admissions process for these groups, can be found here.

Introduction

Once you have submitted your direct application form, either online or on paper to the Admissions Office, your application will be registered on the University's student database and you will be given a unique student ID number. You will also be given one or more application ID numbers. Please quote these numbers in any correspondence you have with the University regarding your application(s).

Application on hold

On receiving your application, the Admissions Office will check that it contains all the required information and documentation.

If you have not provided enough information about your previous studies, your application will be put on hold and you will be informed that until you provide this information, you will not be considered for admission to UNSW. If you do fall into this category, your application status will be set to WAITLIST.

If you have not provided information about your previous studies because you have not yet completed them, please provide this information as soon as it becomes available. Your application will be kept on hold until this time.

Please note: The University will only assess applications for undergraduate study from individuals who have either completed studies at Year 12 level or above, or who are in the final session of such studies. Further information about minimum entry requirements can be found here.

Applications will be held by the Admissions Office for a maximum of 12 months, after which time they will be discarded. It is strongly recommended that you make your application when you are within 6 months of completing your Year 12 equivalent studies.

Application Fee

Your application will also be put on hold if you were required to pay an application fee and did not do so when you submitted your application form.

UNSW requires all international applicants to pay an application fee, unless a recognised officer of the University has granted them an exemption from this. The application fee for online applications is AUD50. The application fee for paper-based applications is currently AUD100.

Application Assessment & Transfer Credit

The Admissions Office assesses applications for undergraduate study and makes offers to study on the basis of academic merit.

If you believe that your previous study makes you eligible to receive advanced standing (also called transfer credit), you should indicate that on your application form or separately in writing. The Admissions Office forwards all requests for exemption (including documentary evidence of courses studied at an equivalent level to UNSW courses) to the relevant school (program authority). Only these program authorities have the right to award advanced standing.

Applicants will be sent written notification of the amount of transfer credit they have been awarded, if their application is successful.

Application decisions

Following the assessment of your application, you will be sent written notification of the outcome.

The University will either:

  • make you a full offer;
  • make you a conditional offer;
  • deny you admission.
