Learning & Teaching @ UNSW


The goals of Learning & Teaching @ UNSW include:

  • Work with Associate Deans (Education), Program Coordinators, Academic Learning and Teaching Fellows and academic and professional colleagues in the provision of academic programs that demonstrate both high quality learning and teaching experiences
  • Support the use of evaluation of learning and teaching data e.g. from CATEI, stakeholder groups, benchmarking, to inform strategic planning, program development and review, and teaching and learning development
  • Provide with colleagues across UNSW, multiple opportunities for capability and enhancement / professional development in learning and teaching at all stages of an academic’s professional career. Such initiatives incorporate curriculum development, implementation, evaluation and improvement in student learning through the provision of a quality face-to-face / virtual learning and teaching experience
  • Assist staff in building capacities around the appropriate use and evaluation of educational technologies through support for online educational design and development, online learning and teaching with Blackboard Vista, and Media design and production, as well as the use of other discipline relevant online applications that enhance student learning
  • Identify, share, recognise and encourage the adaptation of outstanding learning and teaching practice, including the appropriate use of online technologies across the university community
  • Provide leadership in strategic planning, policy development and implementation processes that enable quality learning and teaching practices
  • Continue the research, innovation and development of the optimum learning and teaching environment, including the use of new educational technologies and innovative teaching practices that build and strengthen staff and student engagement in effective learning
  • Seed, guide and promote research and development in learning and teaching to ensure that our educational practices are informed by leadership in research in learning and teaching.


The Learning Centre

  • create a place where students and colleagues are supported in their independent pursuit of learning;
  • work with students to develop strategies to allow them to explore and fulfil their academic potential;
  • together with the Libarary, work with staff and sessional teaching staff to ensure that students can demonstrate entry level academic writing and information literacy skills through the Enabling Skills project;
  • work closely with colleagues in faculties, schools and other units; and contribute professionally to the broader academic community.
The centre provides a wide range of academic support services to students enrolled in degree programs at the University of New South Wales. The Learning Centre assists students in adjusting to academic culture and to new approaches to learning and teaching. The centre also offers a range of learning and language assistance programs.

Online Support
The Library provides a range of online support made available in your space at your pace and in your time. When completed this will assist in creating a better understanding of the information landscape and how to negotiate through it.

ELISE : Enabling Skills Online Tutorial. This tutorial is mandatory for all commencing students. ELISE is accessible via My eLearning VISTA

LOIST : Library Online Information Skills Tutorial. This tutorial builds on the skills acquired through the completion of ELISE. Completion of this is recommended for all undergraduates.

PG ELISE: Post Graduate ELISE provides the commencing Post Graduate with the fundamental tools of research. PG ELISE is accessible via My eLearning VISTA.

The Learning Centre provides workshops and individual consultations and peer support initiatives to enhance students' confidence and capacity to critically incorporate relevant resources into their academic work.
 
The Library purchases a wide range of databases that contain the information required to create new knowledge. How to use Guides and Cheat Sheets are available on the Library web page to assist in the use of these essential tools.

The Library's online training program will contribute to your understanding of what information you need, where to get it, how to evaluate it and how to use it, to support your academic endeavours.



Organisation and Staff Development


Organisation and Staff Development (OSDS) delivers flexible learning and development options for both individuals and teams. These opportunities are delivered through a comprehensive Training Calendar as well as through the provision of tailored learning and development solutions.

As expert learning and development professionals, OSDS can tailor learning and development solutions specific to the needs of work units on campus. To organise an appointment with one of the OSDS Consultants, please contact OSDS.

EDSquad, Faculty of Science


The EdSquad was formed in late 2003 in response to the need for a core group of people to coordinate, facilitate and drive educational policy and initiatives within the Faculty of Science. The group combines people who have a history of interest and involvement in the development of high quality teaching at UNSW; and have complementary strengths and experience in the improvement of learning and teaching in higher education.



Education Development Unit, Australian School of Business at UNSW


The Education Development Unit in the Australian Business School provides support for academic and adjunct staff and students through the design, development and delivery of teaching and learning activities and resources. The aim is of these development activities is to enhance the quality of teaching and learning, and the student experience, in the Australian School of Business.

The EDU engages with academic staff to assist in the development and support of their learning and teaching practice; provides a range of support activities to assist students in their transition to University; provides learning, language and academic skills support and resources for students; acts as a mechanism for the implementation of the School's and UNSW's education quality policies; develops and improve processes and initiatives that enhance teaching and learning in the School.

Additionally, the EDU provides support and assistance in the development of quality assessment instruments and the implementation of CATEI on line. It fosters and promotes research in teaching and learning, and encourages staff to enagage in the scholarship of teaching. It collates a program to reward good teaching in the form of Excellence in Teaching Awards (to be introduced in 2007) and the recognises outstanding student performance through the Dean's Awards for academic achievement.

The EDU offers a number of staff development programs for:

  • Academic Staff: customised, discipline specific support for the design and development of curriculum, assessment and teaching skills;
  • Sessional Staff: workshops on teaching and learning, and course specific training at the commencement of each session;
  • Preparation for Promotions: individual consultations focussing on documenting teaching achievements and writing a teaching portfolio.
  • New Staff (academic and professional): induction programs to introduce new hires to the Auustralian School of Business, to acquaint them with Senior Management, and to familairise them with the School's strategic plans, directions and portfolios.


Office of Medical Education, Faculty of Medicine


The Office of Medical Education (OME) coordinates all aspects relevant to achieving the Faculty’s medical education mission, including support for staff in the development, management, evaluation and improvement of the Faculty’s educational programs.



Professional Education Group (PEG), School of Public Health and Community Medicine


The Professional Education Group (PEG) is a group of staff in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine who are interested in the scholarship of learning and teaching, with particular emphasis in the following areas: curriculum design, development and mapping; on-line learning and teaching; reflective practice; learning portfolios; clinical education; continuing professional education; educational evaluation; student performance and assessment; and student engagement.
