Decision making and learning and teaching policies and strategies at UNSW
All academics play an important role in making decisions about learning and teaching at UNSW. Many of these decisions are made informally on a day-to-day basis in response to student feedback and changes in the learning environment. UNSW's learning and teaching policies and strategies are also the product of a broader, formal decision-making framework. This framework encompasses the Academic Board and its associated committees, particularly the Committee on Education (e.g. through working parties to review Program and Course Development and Approval and Review, Assessment and the Student Experience); the Academic Services Committee; the Undergraduate Studies Committee; and the Postgraduate Coursework Committee. In addition, the Committee on Research contributes to policies affecting research students. Decisions made within this framework are informed by and contribute to current best practice in learning and teaching and, where appropriate, legislative requirements. The Committee on Education is a key participant in many decisions on educational matters at UNSW, and to the formulation of policies and strategies. The Committee works closely with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), and especially with the Learning and Teaching @ UNSW and the Learning Centre. Many existing learning and teaching policies and strategies are products of such collaborations. Policies and strategies developed by specialist committees such as the Committee on Education must ultimately be submitted to Academic Board for approval. See the Approved Policies page for a listing of current policies relating to Learning and Teaching. The 2008-2012 Learning and Teaching Enhancement Plan includes an important mechanism for the continuing development of effective policies and strategies. Goal number nine of the 2005-2007 Plan asserts that "meaningful policy is developed when the Faculties, Schools and individuals are engaged in the development, implementation and evaluation of learning and teaching policies, plans and activities". The Plan for 2008-2011 is currently being developed in collaboration with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Academic Board and Committee on Education. |
