LEARNING & TEACHING

UNSW Learning & Teaching Awards

2003 LTA
The learning and teaching awards grants scheme began at UNSW in 2002. The scheme is distinguished by:

  • an annual focus on high-priority areas for learning and teaching at the university;
  • the requirement that awardees pursue projects to enhance learning and teaching in these high-priority areas;
  • the requirement that awardees attend three workshops and the annual UNSW Learning and Teaching Forum to develop their learning and teaching practice and to share issues, experiences, and achievements; and
  • an emphasis on the development of communities of practice.
In 2002 and 2003, the focus area of the awards was first-year learning and teaching, and the awards were funded by the then Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education and Quality Improvement).

In 2004, the Deans of Commerce and Economics, Medicine, Arts and Social Sciences, Engineering, Science, and Built Environment and the Acting Rector at ADFA supported and funded a similar scheme. The Deans and Rector were asked to identify priority areas for these awards, and there was agreement on postgraduate coursework. In 2004, the awards were valued at $15 000 each. The theme of the 2005-06 Awards is "Enhancing Student Engagement in Learning and Teaching".

In general, applications for the awards must present projects that aim to:

  • improve course design and implementation (for example, assessment, course relevance, engagement, and challenge for adult learners) and other areas as identified by the students and/or the literature;
  • explore the usefulness of the UNSW Guidelines on Learning that Inform Teaching;
  • evaluate the effectiveness of the initiative in improving the student learning and teaching experience;
  • develop materials and/or strategies that are relevant to the wider university community; and
  • result in sustainable improvement.
Projects must be endorsed by the Head of School and include a statement that the project will be supported and will be useful in supporting the wider development of the nominated high-priority area in the school. Projects must also be supported by the Dean of the Faculty.

Preference is usually given to those projects that involve collaboration with colleagues in the development of materials and/or strategies. The involvement of non-academic staff in the project teams (for example, administrative staff, staff from the Learning Centre, Learning & Teaching @ UNSW, Careers and Counselling, the Library, and so on) is encouraged.
