African Human Rights Leader to Speak at UNSW

0th December

Unity Dow, author and the first female to be appointed a High Court Judge in Botswana, will visit UNSW later this month to talk about her long history as a human rights activist, and her new book, "Far and Beyon".
Ms Dow co-founded the Women and Law in Southern Africa Research Project and is a member of the advocacy organisation, International Women's Rights Watch. She was also the plaintiff in a ground-breaking legal case that led to the re-evaluation of numerous Botswanan laws inconsistent with international human rights norms.

"Far and Beyon" relates the ongoing struggles of a woman, the sole provider for four children, at a time when young people are challenging the deeply divided structure of African society. The book gives a fascinating insight into modern African life and the cultural cataclysm that causes families to live in poverty, wear Nike and die of AIDS.

Ms Dow will speak at the UNSW Bookshop at 6pm, 22 August
