UNSW Establishes Japanese Exchange
0th December
Australia's Ambassador to Japan, His Excellency Mr John McCarthy, joined a delegation from UNSW to Tohoku University last week to witness the presentation of the first Anthony Mason Fellowship to be awarded to a member of a Japanese university.
UNSW Vice-Chancellor Professor John Niland presented the Fellowship, for international research and exchange, to Tohoku University's Professor Shinichiro Hayakawa.
Professor Niland also launched a "mutual exchange" office, to be established by UNSW at Tohoku University. Tohoku will establish a similar office at UNSW, to be located within UNSW International. The offices will facilitate student and staff exchanges between the two Universities.
Both moves follow a memorandum of co-operation signed at UNSW in April this year by the President of Tohoku University, Professor Hiroyuki Abe, and Professor Niland. The memorandum put the official seal on a relationship that goes back to the mid 1980s when research collaboration and student and staff exchange programs were established between UNSW's School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering and Tohoku University's Institute of Fluid Science. The relationship was strengthened in 1999, with the signing of an agreement between the two Faculties.
