Teaching Excellence Awarded

The UNSW Kingsford Legal Centre has won an Australian Award for University Teaching, in the category of Law and Legal Studies. The Australian Newspaper sponsors the national awards, presented in Canberra this year by the new Federal Education Minister, Dr Brendan Nelson.

The Legal Centre provides clinical legal education for law students, teaching them by giving them responsibility for representing a client, but with a safety net. The centre also provides free legal assistance to those in the community who can't afford other representation.

"For most of their education students are in classroom reading cases from the higher courts. Here they experience the way the law works in the real world," said the centre's director Frances Gibson.

According to Ms Gibson, working at the centre gives students a chance to put their studies into perspective, showing how the legal system works in practice. It also exposes students to the huge gaps in the system and how it neglects people without adequate financial resources.

Frances Gibson was also recently awarded a Quality Teaching Award from the Australian College of Education, while the Legal Centre team earlier this year won a UNSW Vice-Chancellors Award for Teaching Excellence.
