Mentoring Program Receives Recognition
0th December
The Indigenous Law Student Mentoring Program, a partnership between NSW Young Lawyers and UNSW's Law Faculty and Aboriginal Education Program, has been recognised with a Law Council of Australia award. The award, which was accepted by former UNSW law student and Chair of the Community Services Committee for the NSW Young Lawyers, Jennifer McVicar, recognises programs implemented by an organisation relating to community issues. This prestigious award was shared with the International Humanitarian Law Unit of the Australian Red Cross.
The Mentoring Program matches a young lawyer with a UNSW Indigenous law student so that they can share legal, personal and study skills. The program was launched in May this year with 21 mentorships.
Phyllis Lee, Academic Advisor to Indigenous students in the Law Faculty, said that the program is a pioneering effort and a significant element in the transitional stage from law student to legal professional.
