MEDIA, NEWS & EVENTSBUSINESS ADOPTS ENVIRONMENTAL APPROACH29 November 2001 International environmentalist Dr Karl-Henrik Robeèrt will present a public lecture at the University of New South Wales tonight, 'The Hidden Leadership Towards Sustainability.' Dr Robert established 'The Natural Step'(TNS), which works with businesses and government organisations around the world to apply sustainability principles. International companies that have adopted TNS principles within their businesses include Ikea, Nike and more recently McDonalds. In Australia, The Natural Step is working with the Murray-Darling Catchment Authority to identify solutions to the massive salinity and land degradation problems in the area. Toyota have just announced that it will be training all 4000 staff in Australia in the Natural Step principles. According to Dr Robert, The Natural Step is an elegant and scientifically based framework through and with which individuals, groups and organisations are able to achieve ecological sustainability. "Its strength may be found in the practical manner in which the principles it espouses can be applied," Dr Robert said. "It enables individuals to develop an understanding of sustainability, and then to modify their individual or organisational behaviour and practices."
