UNSW Marks International Poverty Week
0th December
A special series of seminars is being held this week at the University of New South Wales to mark International Anti-Poverty Week. The seminars cover a wide range of issues relating to poverty in Australia and overseas, highlighting major problems and identifying possible priorities for addressing them.
"The need to reduce poverty and improve social cohesion throughout the world has never been more obvious, yet efforts to address it are often ill-directed or grossly under-funded," according to one of the organisers, Professor Julian Disney. "Experience shows that great progress can be made where the requisite wisdom, will and resources are brought to bear.
"We hope that the Anti-Poverty Week seminars promote interest, commitment and co-operation in this crucially important area. Similar events are being held in other countries. Next year we will expand our UNSW activities during the Week and encourage other Australians to develop their own initiatives."
The seminars have been organised by the newly-formed UNSW Social Justice Network which links together a wide range of people from different schools and units who are working on aspects of social justice. Professor Julian Disney, Director of the Social Justice Project in the Faculty of Law, co-ordinates the network.
Topics covered in this week's seminars include human rights and poverty; housing, homelessness and poverty; trends in poverty incidence; and the impact of the legal system on poverty.
