ALP Leader Visits UNSW
0th December
Federal Opposition Leader Kim Beazley was on campus last week to deliver the 23rd Asia Lecture for the Asia-Australia Institute.
Addressing an Institute dinner at the Scientia, Mr Beazley outlined his vision for Australia's international relations and in particular, security relationships in the Asia Pacific region. In the last of three major foreign policy statements leading up to the Federal election, the Opposition Leader attacked the Howard Government's handling of the Tampa boat people crisis and identified engagement with Asia as the most important foreign policy issue facing Australia.
Calling for Australia to build a new relationship with Indonesia, Mr Beazley said the problem of people smuggling could only be addressed through cooperation with our regional neighbours. "The Tampa crisis shows that Australia can have no security or certainty as a nation without building sound international relationships," he said.
The Asia-Australia Institute is an independent think tank based at UNSW. The Asia Lectures are presented by Australian and Asian political and business leaders in the interests of promoting greater regional understanding.
