Federation Fellowships for UNSW Scientists

0th December

Two of the first 15 Federation Fellowships to be awarded by the Federal Government have gone to University of New South Wales scientists Professor Robert Clark and Professor Martin Green.

The Federation Fellowships, inaugurated this year, are the most prestigious and richest publicly funded research fellowships ever offered in Australia. They are awarded on the advice of the Australian Research Council.

In announcing the Fellowships, Prime Minister Howard described the recipients as an "elite team" who have placed Australia at the forefront of innovation.

Robert Clark's award recognises his groundbreaking work in the development of a silicon quantum computer. The testimonial notes: "The attempt to be the first in the world to demonstrate the feasibility of a scalable, solid state quantum computer….is at the forefront of world science today and through Professor Clark's work, Australia is a significant player."

Martin Green's work is described as having led to fundamental advances in the understanding of how light is transformed into electricity in silicon solar cells, and how these insights can be applied to the reverse process: the transformation of electricity into light.

Each Fellowship recipient will receive a salary of $1.125 million over five years. A total of up to 125 Federation Fellowships will be awarded over the next five years, with the next round of recipients to be announced in early 2002.
