Indigenous Commerce

UNSW's Faculty of Commerce and Economics is set to launch a preparatory program and scholarship fund for Indigenous students.

The aim of the program is to encourage Indigenous students into tertiary business studies. Dean of the Faculty, Professor Greg Whittred, says: "Until now, a business degree has not perhaps been seen to be as important to Indigenous Australians as law or medicine.

"There are currently only 21 Indigenous Australians, out of a total of 3650 local students, studying commerce and economics at UNSW. We're hopeful that the preparatory program, and the scholarship fund, will change that situation."

The Commerce and Economics Preparation Program (CEPP) will be a free residential program over four weeks, starting in 2003. The Indigenous Scholarships Appeal Fund is based on a generous donation from Colin and Jose Ryan. Colin Ryan is Chairman of ATP Innovations and a Director of the UNSW Foundation.

The program and scholarship fund will be launched at 5pm next Tuesday (27 August) at the National Innovation Centre, Australian Technology Park, Redfern. Doing the honours will be Aboriginal lawyer Terri Janke and the Managing Director of Goldman Sachs, Warwick Negus, who is the new Chair of the Faculty's Advisory Board.
