Rock Jock

0th December

Scott Hocknull
Young Australian of the Year, UNSW PhD student and palaeontologist Scott Hocknull, will present the UNSW and Australian Museum Science Week Lecture at the Scientia this Thursday.

In this free public lecture, one of the highlights of Science Week, Scott will talk about the future of vertebrate palaeontology in Australia and what he sees as the 'fantastic' potential for consolidating the work of generations of Australian palaeontologists.

"Australia is truly the world's last safe palaeontological frontier, and what we need to do is to develop this science into a world leader for Australia", Scott says. In his lecture, he will also look at the hardship brought about by lack of funding for research, and how the "rock jocks" have needed to develop new ways of raising awareness and resources.

Scott, 24, who says his childhood dream was to be "a palaeontologist, a dinosaur hunter and do all of it in Australia", is assistant curator of palaeontology at the Queensland Museum, which makes him Australia's youngest museum curator. He was named the 2002 Young Australian of the Year for his studies of plant and animal fossils and his commitment to protecting Australia's natural environment.

The lecture begins at 6pm. Anyone wishing to attend should phone 9385 2355 or email: events@unsw.edu.au
