UNSW scientists and artists are taking their expertise and vision to the public in talks, displays and exhibitions this month as part of National Science Week.
During the Science in the City program at the Australian Museum, scientists from the University will give talks on topics as diverse as astronomy in Antarctica, genetic destinies, life elsewhere in the Universe and food. The event is designed to give school students and the general public the background to some recent advances in science and technology.
Across town, at the Tin Sheds Gallery, artists Susan Andrews and Isobel Johnston will present an exhibition of scientific images completed during a two-year residency with the Faculty of Science. The artists worked with microscopic images of microarrays, gels, automated sequences of DNA, bacteria, giardia, crytosporidium and jellyfish polyps.
While these images are common place to many scientists, the artists said they wanted to offer back to the scientific community and to the general public the "extraordinary and inspiring nature of this subject matter".
Science in the City runs until August 18. Imaging Science runs until August 24 at the Tin Sheds Gallery, 154 City Rd, Chippendale.
