Professor Somasundaram Valliappan, from UNSW's school of civil and environmental engineering, has won a major international award for his contribution to the field of computational mechanics.
Professor Valliappan was presented with an International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM) Award at the World Congress on Computational Mechanics, held recently in Vienna.
The award is given out every four years in recognition of outstanding and sustained contributions to the broad field of computational mechanics, and research which has significantly advanced the understanding of theories and methods in the field.
Professor Valliappan's award recognises contributions in both these areas, spanning his
35-year career. He was nominated for the award by twenty international peers from the IACM Awards Committee.
Currently President of the Australian Association for Computational Mechanics, Professor Valliappan was also elected in Vienna as one of IACM's three Vice-Presidents, with responsibility for representing the Asia-Australia region. This is the first time in the IACM's 16-year history that an Australian has been elected as a Vice-President.
Professor Valliappan's research interests include the stress analysis of soil and rock mechanics; stability analysis of large dams; wave propagation; and fuzzy computations in finite element method.
