Professor Michael Vitale

0th December

Professor Michael Vitale has today informed the Board of the Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM) that he will be stepping down as Dean and Director of the School. His resignation will take effect on 1 January 2003.

Professor Vitale, who has been Dean of the AGSM since January 2001, will be taking on a key advisory role in relation to the University of Sydney’s new Graduate School of Government. He will also assist UNSW in supporting the development of policy on technology transfer, particularly in the field of biotechnology.

Prior to this, Professor Vitale plans to spend six months on sabbatical, furthering his research into IT governance and the commercialisation of biotechnology, and co-teaching a new MBA course on biotechnology at the AGSM.

The AGSM is a school of both UNSW and the University of Sydney and is located on UNSW’s Kensington campus. It is consistently ranked as the premier Australian business school in the Asia-Pacific region.

“The achievements of the AGSM over the past 12 months in particular have been outstanding,” Professor Vitale said today.

“In its twenty-fifth anniversary year, AGSM has retained its ranking as the premier Australian business school in the Asia-Pacific region and its MBA (Executive) program was ranked, once again, by the Financial Times (UK) as one of the top 15 in the world.

“In addition, the AGSM became the first Australian business school to be awarded international accreditation by the AACSB, the world’s premier independent agency for MBA programs. This has placed the AGSM firmly in the company of other world-class business schools.

“My time with the AGSM has been immensely rewarding. I am now looking forward to taking up other opportunities related to my particular areas of research. These are areas that are of critical importance to Australia.”

The Deputy Chairman of the AGSM Board, Mr Robert Cartwright, said Professor Vitale had made a considerable contribution to securing the pre-eminence of the School in both Australia and the region.

“On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Michael for his energy and tireless enthusiasm in maintaining AGSM’s leading stature during his two years as Dean,” Mr Cartwright said.

“Michael has done an outstanding job. The AGSM Board, faculty and staff wish him well in his future endeavours.”

Professor Vitale will travel to Barcelona at the weekend to receive the award of Fellow of the Association for Information Systems (AIS). The award recognises outstanding contributions to the Information Systems discipline in terms of research, teaching and service to the profession.

An announcement about an Acting Dean to replace Professor Vitale will be made before 1 January.
