Former Vice-Chancellor of UNSW, Emeritus Professor John Niland, was awarded an honorary doctorate of science last week in recognition of his outstanding contribution to higher education and to the University.
Chancellor Dr John Yu awarded the honorary degree to Professor Niland at a medical graduation ceremony on Friday. This latest tribute follows the University’s conferral earlier this year of the title Professor Emeritus, in acknowledgement of his contribution both to the University and his own discipline, as well as the international standing of his research.
John Niland retired in July 2002, after a decade at the helm of UNSW. Current Vice -Chancellor Professor Rory Hume, in Friday’s award citation, described his predecessor as one of Australia’s most outstanding vice-chancellors of the past several decades. “He provided exceptional leadership in critical times for the higher education sector, as it faced unprecedented challenges,” Professor Hume said.
His citation concluded: ”Council, noting his long and distinguished service to the University, resolved that it would be fitting if the degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa were to be conferred on John Rodney Niland, Companion of the Order of Australia, Bachelor of Commerce, Master of Commerce, University of New South Wales; Doctor of Philosophy, University of Illinois; Doctor of the University, Charles Sturt University; Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia and today it is with pleasure and gratitude that we admit him to the University’s highest honour.”
John Niland was appointed an officer in the Order of Australia in 1992 for services to industrial relations and in 2001 became a Companion of the Order of Australia for services to education. He continues to serve the University in his capacity as Chairman of the University Foundation.
This was the eighth honorary doctorate to be conferred by the University during 2002. The other recipients have been social commentator Hugh Mackay, Taiwanese scientist Dr Yuan Tseh Lee, Federal Court Judge Ronald Sackville, Hong Kong Chief Justice Andrew K N Lai, photographer David Moore, writer and critic Robert Dessaix and businessman Wal King.
