Associate Professors Rae Frances and Bruce Scates from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences have won a $40,000 Australian Award for University Teaching.

The federal government awards, which are sponsored by The Australian newspaper, were presented this week in Canberra by Education Minister Brendan Nelson.

The history teaching team, comprising partners in life as well as in work, were honoured in the humanities and arts category. Their contribution to teaching also earned them a UNSW Vice-Chancellor’s team award earlier this year.

Both professors are credited with revitalising teaching of first-year Australian history, at a time of declining interest in the subject at other universities. “They have sparked curiosity and generated a love of learning in their students,” noted the national award citation.

“Our general approach to teaching is shaped by our passionate belief in the importance of what we’re doing. A society without a sense of history is like an individual with amnesia – lost and confused,” they said.

While Professors Frances and Scates each have their own style of teaching, they “complement” each other. “We like to devise imaginative and innovative teaching strategies which employ artefacts, archival sources, performance and role play to promote effective learning. We aim to make history live.”
