The research behind the development of breakthrough ‘extended-wear’ contact lenses has been recognised with a leading Australian business/university award.

The Cooperative Research Centre for Eye Research and Technology (CRCERT), based at UNSW, and eyecare company CIBA Vision have received a Business/Higher Education Round Table (B-HERT) Award for Outstanding Achievement in Collaborative R&D.

The award recognises the collaborative effort that went into developing the first high oxygen permeable soft contact lenses approved for 30 days of continuous wear. Launched in 1999, the Focus Night and Day lenses are now available in more than 40 countries.

“The collaborative spirit forged during the project has been the key to its success,” says Professor Brien Holden, Director of CRCERT.

“This award is a tribute to the outstanding efforts and commitment of the whole team.”

The B-HERT Award follows the Award for Technology Transfer also given to the project by the Cooperative Research Centres Association in May 2002. These annual awards recognise outstanding examples of innovative applied research by CRCs.
