Forum on Gender Equity

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rory Hume, will hold a forum with academics on Wednesday 27 November, to brainstorm the issues surrounding academic advancement for women.
Only twenty nine percent of academics at UNSW are women. While there is no evidence of systemic discrimination against women academics, many more women than men report that their roles as parents and carers have a negative impact on their careers. This situation comes at a cost to women professionally and to the University.
These were some of the findings from a report commissioned by the Equity and Diversity Unit from Professor Belinda Probert, of RMIT.
While male and female academics were found to have similar teaching and administrative loads and equal commitment to their research and careers, women have different career patterns.
Professor Probert’s recommendations include increasing promotion and PhD completion rates for women, examining child care needs and mentoring support.
The Forum will discuss key report findings and strategies for action. Although likely to be of specific interest to women academics, all academic staff are warmly welcome. Enquiries to the Equity and Diversity Unit on 9385 6354. The forum is from 10am to 12 noon in the Tyree Room, Scientia Building.
