Whose Corpse is it Anyway? The 2003 McCredie Fellowship
0th December
A project looking at the legal issues that cause disputes over bodies has won the 2003 Donald McCredie Fellowship.
The University of New South Wales Foundation has announced that Professor Rosalind Atherton, Dean of the Division of Law at Macquarie University, won the $10,000 prize with her proposal to develop a legal regulatory regime for resolving disputes over corpses and body parts.
The project seeks to identify the legal issues that cause major disputes over bodies; to analyse the legal rights that exist presently in relation to such disputes; and to locate those issues in the context of changing family relationships, a multicultural society, advances in medical technology and ethical principles.
The Donald McCredie Trust, administered by the University of New South Wales, was established in 1994 in the memory of Justice McCredie who died in a plane crash the previous year. It has been awarded in 1996 and 1998. Professor Atherton is the third recipient of the fellowship.
