Ron Fitch still on track at 92

Dr Ron Fitch is living proof that age is no barrier to scholarship.

The 92-year-old is believed to have become the world's oldest PhD recipient, after receiving a doctorate in engineering from the University of New South Wales.

"I'm very grateful to UNSW for giving me this opportunity," said Ron. "Working on my doctorate was fun from start to finish. This graduation ceremony comes 70 years after I was first awarded with a Bachelor of Engineering."

A former South Australian railway commissioner, Ron received an OBE for services to transport in 1979.

According to his supervisor, UNSW Emeritus Professor John Black:"Ron is an inspiration to us all and a great example of life-long learning. As his examiners made clear, his work is of a very high quality.

"He systematically analysed vast amounts of statistical data on the operational and financial performance of the SA railways. And his thesis was beautifully written - dispelling any stereotype that engineers can't write!" said Professor Black, from the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Ron's achievement has attracted media coverage around Australia and overseas.
