The Diabetes Transplant Unit of the Prince of Wales Hospital is holding a workshop today (Tuesday) on that controversial area of medical research, stem cells.

The one-day workshop will be introduced by Professor Elspeth McLachlan (UNSW's Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research) and the background and clinical need for stem cell work will be outlined by the Diabetes Transplant Unit head, Professor Bernie Tuch. The long-term intention is to create a NSW Stem Cell Network and to enhance Australia's participation in stem cell research.

Other speakers include Professor Richard Harvey of the Victor Chang Institute, who will talk about the use of stem cells in heart disease; Associate Professor Marcus Vowels from the Cord Stem Blood Bank at Sydney Children's Hospital (haemopoietic disorders); Professor Anne Cunningham, Sydney Children's Hospital (neurological disorders); Professor Minas Coroneo of the Ophthalmology Department, Prince of Wales Hospital (eye disease); Dr Megan Best from School of Community Medicine, UNSW (the ethical issues), and Ms Kerry Doyle of the BioUnit, NSW Government.

The afternoon workshop of the NSW Stem Cell Working Group will be chaired by UNSW's Dean of Science, Professor Dennis Lincoln.
