"Students sense whether you want to be in the classroom or not, almost from the second you walk in the door," says Dr Julian Cox, a Senior Lecturer in the School of Chemical Sciences, "and that impacts heavily on their attitude and their rapport with you."

This attitude has also impacted on Julian, who has won a Quality Teaching Award from the NSW Minister for Education and Training and the Australian College of Educators.

Julian received his award from the Minister for Education and Training, John Watkins, at Government House last week, for demonstrating "high quality teaching expertise and professional values as an accomplished teacher".

The award followed an exhaustive selection process that included a full day of monitoring by the selection panel as it watched Julian in action in front of two Food Science classes and interviewed his students.

"I thrive on interaction, and establishing a strong rapport with students is very important to me, and to them," Julian says.

That is why he prefers this picture to more conventional photos. “Íf you want to be a tiger for education you have to look the part.”
