Vice-chancellor Forum With Students

0th December

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rory Hume, met with about 50 students at a Student Guild forum last week.

Issues of great concern to students were the lack of computer resources, in particular for postgraduate students; English proficiency requirements, particularly in the wake of the recent shooting episode at Monash University; and the issue of fee-paying places for local undergraduates.

The Vice-Chancellor outlined longer-term financial strategies for the University, including lobbying the government for funding, raising money through enterprise, and philanthropic support. Professor Hume told the forum that web-based material for teaching would remain only an adjunct to classroom teaching, since face-to-face interaction is valuable. He said that there were no plans for UNSW to move to predominantly on-line teaching and that web-based learning was no cheaper than classroom-based learning.

Professor Hume supported the notion of anonymous or blind marking, which is a high priority for the Student Guild. He also raised the possibility of year-round classes, a move that would enhance the viability of a rail link to the Kensington campus for the state government.
