Ivan Dougherty Gallery, part of UNSW's College of Fine Arts (COFA), is celebrating its silver anniversary with an exhibition and auction to raise funds for a new University Art Museum.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rory Hume, will open the exhibition, 'A Silver Lining & A New Beginning', on Thursday.

The show features works donated by artists from around Australia who have exhibited at the Gallery since its inception in 1977. The exhibition culminates with a gala art auction, to be staged by Christie's Australia on 2 December, with all proceeds going towards the new building.

Planned as part of a major re-development of the COFA campus, the museum will consist of three main galleries across two levels. It will allow for large scale, high profile exhibitions of art from Australia and abroad and will also be used to showcase other COFA initiatives, such as the new iCinema research centre. Construction is scheduled to commence in early 2004.
