Juvenilia Press Comes to UNSW

Professor Alexander
In a publishing coup for the University, Professor Christine Alexander has been appointed as the new general editor of Juvenilia Press - the world's only publisher dedicated to the childhood works of famous authors.

Professor Alexander, from the School of English, is a keynote speaker at the first Australian conference on literary juvenilia, being held at UNSW this Sunday.

"The Press thrives on publishing the early writing of authors ranging from Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte, to current literary notables such as Margaret Atwood," she said.

"A unique aspect of the Press is student involvement at all levels. This is what makes it such a valuable scholarly exercise."

Other authors under consideration include Evelyn Waugh, Lewis Carroll and Katherine Mansfield. Professor Alexander is also hoping to persuade Australian writers to contribute in the same way. "We would very much like to work on authors like Les Murray, Tim Winton, David Malouf, Kate Grenville and Elizabeth Jolley, as well as earlier writers like Miles Franklin," she said.

Professor Alexander and the founder of the Press, Professor Juliet McMaster, are currently writing the first book on juvenilia for Cambridge University Press, The Child Author: from Jane Austen to Virginia Woolf.
