Juvenilia Press Comes to Australia
0th December
The youthful works of great writers will be in the spotlight this weekend when the University of New South Wales hosts the first Australian conference on literary juvenilia.
In a publishing coup for the University, Professor Christine Alexander has been appointed as the new general editor of international publisher, Juvenilia Press.
“The Press thrives on publishing the early writing of now-famous authors, ranging from Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte, to current literary notables such as Carol Shields, Philip Larkin and Margaret Atwood, who has donated three of her teenage works to the Press,” said Professor Alexander, from the School of English.
A unique aspect of Juvenilia Press is student involvement at all levels of research and editing. Other volumes under consideration include Evelyn Waugh, Lewis Carroll, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Christina Rossetti, John Ruskin and Katherine Mansfield.
“Now that the Press has come to Australia, I’m hoping to persuade some of our writers to contribute in the same way. No one has really explored Australian juvenilia before – this is a very exciting opportunity,” said Alexander.
“We would very much like to work on writers like Les Murray, Tim Winton, David Malouf, Kate Grenville and Elizabeth Jolley, as well as earlier writers like Miles Franklin.”
Professor Alexander and the founder and retiring editor of the Press, Professor Juliet McMaster, from Canada, are currently writing the first book on juvenilia for Cambridge University Press, The Child Author: from Jane Austen to Virginia Woolf.
“We’ve opened up a space and made childhood writings a much better recognised category of literature. The books that emerge provide a window on the writer’s development, and engaging glimpses of the young genius at work,” she said.
