Research Grants for UNSW

The Australian Research Council (ARC) has announced details of its latest round of grants, which will fund new research projects worth about $290 million Australia-wide over four years. Close to $95 million of that funding will be available in 2003.

UNSW's success rate in bidding for the ARC grants was well above the national average. The University will receive a total of $19.5 million for 81 projects under the Discovery scheme, which funds innovative research. Just under $5 million was awarded to UNSW for 25 projects under round one of the Linkage program, which funds collaborative projects between university researchers and industry partners. Corresponding contributions, to the tune of $6.6 million, will come from industry partners.

News of the ARC grants follows the announcement that almost $15 million in NHMRC funding will go to two research teams headed by UNSW medical staff. Professor Gordon Parker and his team at the Euroa Centre, Prince of Wales Hospital, have been awarded $7.7 million for research into depressive disorders. The second team, headed by Professor Roland Stocker from the Centre for Thrombosis and Vascular Research, receives $7.125 million for research into atherosclerosis. The grants are over five years.
