First World Report on Violence

0th December

On October 3, the World Health Organisation (WHO) will release the first World Report on Violence and Health.

Professor Anthony Zwi, head of UNSW's School of Public Health and Community Medicine, is one of the report's co-editors, and will be in Brussels for the launch.

The report examines a broad spectrum of violence including child abuse and neglect, youth violence, intimate partner violence, sexual violence, abuse of the elderly, self-directed violence and collective violence.

"The report is the first comprehensive global study on the magnitude and causes of violence. In particular, it seeks to identify the common determinants of different forms of violence, and to consider the evidence for effective responses," said Professor Zwi.

Data and experiences from Australia are featured in the report.

"Australia is in an important position to contribute to addressing violence locally, nationally and regionally," he said.

"National and local public health institutions should recognise that violence prevention is a legitimate and important part of their mission."

Professor Zwi is also concerned that collective violence and instability be addressed in the region. "Australia and its international aid and health sector can play an important role in identifying areas at risk of violence and can assist in developing early responses."

On November 18, UNSW will host a conference of public health experts to consider Australian responses to violence and to examine the report. NSW Health will be supporting the meeting.

Professor Zwi is available for interview.
