ARCHBISHOP ZYCINSKI TO SPEAK AT UNSW
0th December
As Poland gears itself for a national referendum on entry to the European Union (EU), the Chancellor of the Catholic University of Lublin, Archbishop Jozef Zycinski, will speak at UNSW on Polish attitudes to the EU.
Poland is slated to enter the EU by 2004, with a national referendum on the accession due as soon as March 2003. At least 50% turnout is required if the referendum is to be validated, but an economic downturn and anger over the negotiation process are swelling domestic opposition.
Archbishop Zycinski, arguably the leading intellectual presence and public figure in the Polish Catholic Church, will address these issues and the other challenges facing Poland in its bid to enter the Union. The free public lecture will be this Friday at 7pm.
Archbishop Zycinski has authored over 30 books and more than 350 papers, published in 9 languages. He is a distinguished philosopher of science, theologian and participant in Polish public debate.
The lecture is organised by the European Law Centre, UNSW and the Australian Institute of Public Affairs.
