NO MORE BURDEN ON STUDENTS, URGES UNSW

0th December

The Council of the University of New South Wales will urge the Federal Government to ensure that the funding model adopted for the higher education sector does not involve placing any additional financial burden on students.

In a specially convened meeting, Council last night endorsed a number of 'key principles' and recommendations which will be put to the Government, as it enters the final stage of its review of the higher education sector. They include:

  • That Council supports what it believes to be the emerging national consensus that Australia's universities should increasingly diversify, in order to provide a range of strong Australian universities that will meet a broad spectrum of society's needs.

  • That Council urges the Government to increase the proportion of the Federal budget allocated to the higher education sector, rather than placing any additional financial burden on students.

  • That Council considers that the present HECS charges, coupled with a declining repayment threshold, acts as a deterrent for those who are financially disadvantaged and wish to access higher education.

  • That Council urges the government to increase the flexibility of Federal funding arrangements, through a range of incentives and accountability measures, in order to support the increasing diversity of Australian universities.

  • That Council urges the government to put in place mechanisms that encourage both increased philanthropic support for universities and appropriate entrepreneurial activities.
