Guess How Much CO2

0th December

Thousands of milk cartons are piled on the Library and Red Centre lawns this week as part of a demonstration on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Each carton represents 1 kg of CO2, and each pile shows the emissions resulting from one hour of UNSW's electricity use.

"The amount of CO2 the university emits in one hour is quite shocking," says Danielle Cole, coordinator for unswitch, the UNSW energy conservation program. "This competition is part of an ongoing campaign to raise awareness and encourage people to conserve electricity."

unswitch invites students and staff to visit the displays and guess how many kilograms are represented in the piles. Entry forms can be completed at tables set up on the lawns, and the first 500 entrants will receive free seedlings. Prizes, worth over $4500, include a weekend for two at Lilianfels in the Blue Mountains.

The winners of the competition will be announced on Monday 30th September and the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rory Hume, will award the major prizes.
