Counter-terrorism: What cost our civil liberties?

Are human rights incompatible with a ‘war on terror’? How can we preserve civil liberties in an emerging ‘risk society’? What restrictions are Australians prepared to accept in the name of national security?

Two leading authorities will address these issues on Wednesday 27 August at a seminar organised by the Australian Human Rights Centre at the University of New South Wales.

Speakers:

  • Associate Professor Michael Humphrey, Head of the School of Sociology at UNSW. His recent publications include The Politics of Atrocity and Reconciliation: From Terror to Trauma (2002).
  • Professor Hilary Charlesworth, Director of the Centre for International and Public Law at the Australian National University. Her recent publications include Writing in rights: Australia and the protection of human rights (2002) and Concepts of Equality in International Law (2002).
