Giant globe returns to campus

21 November 2003

Bronwyn Oliver, Professor Hume and Globe
The distinctive giant globe has returned to the University Art Collection and has been reinstalled at International Square, on the University Mall.

The brazed copper sphere, entitled Globe, is the work of artist and College of Fine Arts alumna, Bronwyn Oliver. It was the winning entry in a sculpture competition held by the University in September 2001, and was installed on the Mall in September 2002. However, the sculpture was vandalised prior to its scheduled launch. It was repaired and reinstalled in August 2003.

In officially launching the sculpture last week, Vice-Chancellor Professor Rory Hume acknowledged both the financial support of the U-Committee for the Globe's creation and the University's commitment to Australian cultural life, through music, fine arts and cultural research.

Oliver's work has been shown in public and private collections in England, Europe, US and throughout Australia. She has also won many prestigious art awards including the Moet & Chandon Australian Art Fellowship, France; the Marten Bequest Scholarship for Sculpture, France and she was short listed in 2001 for the Helen Lempiere National Sculpture Award.

There were 50 guests at the Globe launch including members of Sydney's art community.
