Designs of the future

10 November 2003

Combining the technical expertise of an engineer, the finesse of a designer and a marketing manager's savvy, industrial designers seek new ways to make our lives more comfortable and enjoyable.

Fourth-year industrial design students at the University of New South Wales have been set the task of pushing the boundaries of design and innovation for their final-year projects.

The results are about to be on public display - and the students hope their designs will catch not just the imagination of potential users but also the eager eye of prospective manufacturers.

What: University of New South Wales Industrial Design Exhibition

When: 10am - 6pm, Monday December 1 - Sunday December 7

Where: Argyle Stores, The Rocks, Sydney

Exhibition highlights include:

  • Emergency food distribution packaging - Designed for aerial delivery, this largely biodegradable package is capable of delivering 56 full meals and water per day.
  • Mobile Parents Room - Consisting of two individual cubicles/stations, it is ideally suited for outdoor events such as fairs, or for existing buildings (photo attached).
  • Child's Aircraft Seat - Based on a child's body dimensions, the seat encourages correct lumbar and neck support and can be held secure by the aircraft seat belt on long-haul flights.
  • Additional car shelter - Extending from the driveway or wall, it can be set up or retracted in minimal time by one person.
  • Window cleaning tool - complete with integrated water reservoir with microfiber scrubber and rubber squeegee. It eliminates the need to carry a bucket or water hosing. Ideal for apartment living.
  • Two-seater lounge - it looks like a normal, funky two-seater lounge but when the need arises, it can be transfigured into a four-seater plus freestanding coffee table (photo attached).
  • Table/workstation, - A two-table unit that once opened houses a workstation area for the home office user. When the workstation is not in use, it can be folded into a side/display table.
