Sustainable Living Competition Expo and award ceremony

17 November 2003

Channel V presenters Mike Kerry and Jabba will be hosting this year's Sustainable Living Competition awards to be held on Friday December 5.

Innovations, eco-solutions and educational projects produced by Australia's youth will be on show.

The Sustainable Living competition attracts more than 1,000 entries from high schools across Australia. It is the largest activity of its kind and has reached millions of school students in the four years it has been running.

Some of the student entries include:

  • Solar powered lawn mower: stripped and rebuilt from a two-stroke lawnmower using a solar panel, a voltage regulator, a battery, a second hand radiator fan motor, a personally developed cutting blade and parts from a Holden Commodore VL.
  • Nepalese wind turbine: a power system for a Nepalese village decorated with traditional designs.
  • Milk bottle kayak: created by a Year 11 student from Queensland, the kayak is made entirely out of recycled 2 litre milk bottles.
  • Eco-friendly house: a self-sufficient environmentally friendly house that minimizes waste and energy use.
